Quints: five of a kind

Three hands that cannot be made without jokers, and how many you need.

The card · lesson 8 of 10

There are only four of any tile, so a quint is four of a tile and a joker, or three and two jokers. This is the one section of the card where the jokers are not a bonus. They are the hand.

11111 1111 11111

Three suits, any like number, 40. Two quints and a kong, so at least two jokers, and every group takes them.

FF 11111 22 33333

One suit, three consecutive numbers, 45. The pair of flowers and the pair in the middle take none.

11111 44444 DDDD

Any two numbers in one suit, with the opposite dragon, 40.

The arithmetic decides it. Two quints need at least two jokers, and each joker you place is a joker somebody at the table can take back by exchanging the real tile for it. Three jokers in hand with the numbers already in place is a quint hand. One joker is not.

Note

The one-suit hand is the best of the three when you have it, because 45 is the highest exposed score on the card, but the two pairs in it come from the wall. Count them before you count the points.
