The wall is a clock. Once you can see how few tiles remain, you can count your own draws: what is left, divided by four, is roughly how many more times you will pick.
Three draws left and four tiles needed is not a hand any more, and knowing that changes what you should be doing with your discards.
Note
Calls shorten the clock for everyone. Each one skips players, so a hand with several exposures ends sooner than the wall alone suggests.
Reading ahead is fine. The path takes lessons in order, so this one ticks off once you get here.
