Playing for the wall game

If the wall runs out with nobody declaring, the hand is a wall game. Everyone still alive scores the same small amount, and the player who was one tile away scores exactly that too.
So denying a win has genuine value. Late in a losing hand, the question stops being how do I win and becomes how do I make sure nobody does.
Note
It only works if you started early enough. A player who plays for the win until the last three turns has usually already discarded the tiles that would have kept them safe.
