By the first discard you have already seen six to nine tiles that other people chose to get rid of. That is a lot of information, and most players have forgotten it by their second turn.
You do not need to remember all of it. One fact per player is plenty: the suit they were shedding, or the section they clearly were not in.
Note
Careful with the last pass. Tiles from a blind pass were never chosen, so they say nothing about the player who sent them.
Reading ahead is fine. The path takes lessons in order, so this one ticks off once you get here.
